Social History Journey
It has been announced that Patrick will recreate a journey across Britain that was carried out by journalist Colin Howard in 1938.
Howard travelled from Land’s End to John O’Groats, the two extreme points of mainland Britain. On the way he stopped at a number of cities, towns and villages and made a record of his impressions, experiences and conversations.
Patrick said, “Howard’s account of his journey serves as a social history of the state of the nation a year before the outbreak of World War 2. The aim of this journey is to retrace Howard’s journey and compare and contrast the country as it was then with how it is now, seventy five years later.”
Patrick is Honorary Professor of Sociology at the University of Surrey.
